"We have used Lacto-Whey for 20 years. We use it as the primary soluble nitrogen source with the benefit of the high energy component. The product is used in milking rations with little or no negative effects of the higher soluble protein. This product aids in the delivery of a soluble protein source with a readily available microbial energy source in the form of lactate. The energy component is rumen neutral with little or no effect on rumen pH. This has at times improved milk fat."

I recommend Lacto-Whey in almost all of the milking rations I work with.

Although the crude protein is 100% degradable, Lacto-Whey doesn't raise MUN levels like I usually see with urea and molasses.

I suspect the ammonium lactate is feeding the rumen microbes, keeping their numbers high. The microbes in turn, use the free nitrogen before it has a chance to spill into the bloodstream.

The tackiness of the Lacto-Whey is the biggest reason I still recommend it when soybean meal gets cheap. Anything I can do to keep the cows from sorting is a plus!"
